A reminder about Concrete Finishing in cold weather.

As we have noted previously, cold weather affects the concrete work. The active temperature requires different mixes of aggregate and different, most often longer, curing and setting times. This impacts the time required to ‘finish’ the concrete, which is the final and a critical part of all continuous concrete pours.

As the temperatures have lowered again, there will be later working hours for concrete finishing. This also means the crane lights will stay on later to ensure the safety of the crews working on the top level of the building. For example, if temperatures are below freezing concrete work is likely to continue to 11 pm or later. To ensure the safety and feasibility of this critical work, the crane lights will stay on until the work is being completed.

A note on trucks & deliveries on Lombard Street.

On occasion the site will have 3 trucks, 1 delivery truck and 2 concrete trucks, arrive for unloading at the same time. Minto realizes this presents a further challenge to the movement of traffic on Lombard Street. Every effort is made to avoid this eventuality, however, Minto’s construction management team does not have full control of when deliveries arrive. If and when, for example, a drywall delivery arrives at the same time as a concrete truck, while there is already an initial concrete truck unloading into the concrete pump, there will be an unavoidable impact on the north lanes of Lombard Street. If Minto were to make a habit of turning away one of the concrete trucks in a situation like this, it would cause significant delays in completing the building and therefore extend the construction period, ultimately creating more impact on the immediate area for everyone.

We also note that the Paid Duty Officer has discretion to make decisions on traffic flow as he or she determines is best for safety and the movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Minto does not have the authority to direct or instruct the Paid Duty Officer.

Deliveries expected for the week of December 27th – 29th:

  • We expect up to three (3) Concrete deliveries this week.
  • We expect one (1) Steel (rebar) delivery this week.
  • There may be one (1) drywall delivery this week.
  • There may be one (1) window delivery his week.
  • There may be one (1) carpentry delivery this week

  • There will be (3) Traffic Management staff and one (1) Paid Duty Police Officer will be on site to manage traffic flows this coming week.

  • If there are significant changes to planned construction activity, we will post and circulate an update during the week.
